Girls
Tournament Report
By Aaron Brown
With five tournaments
taking place over the weekend, there is plenty to analyze after a total of 37
games. Here is a closer look at what happened on Saturday at GBN, Metea, NC, NN,
and Stevenson:
GBN Tournament
St Viator emerged from the GBN Tournament with their first tourney title
of 2011, winning the event based on a tiebreaker after finishing among
three teams with 3-1 records. GBN and LWE also finished 3-1; the hosts
beat Viator 8-7, Viator topped LWE 6-3, and LWE defeated GBN 9-5.
Libertyville finished in fourth place after beating Resurrection 14-12.
Metea Valley
Tournament
Bremen racked up 47 goals in three games en route to the Metea Valley Tournament
title on Saturday. They earned wins over the hosts, Maine South, and Oak Park.
Metea eked out a 10-9 win over Oak Park and knocked off Maine South 13-7 in the
tournament opener to claim second place. Oak Park beat Maine South 11-4 to
finish in the third spot.
Naperville Central Tournament
The Redhawks allowed just 5 goals in wins over Evanston, Jenison, and
Sandburg on Saturday to win their own event with a 3-0 record.
Sandburg finished in second place with a 2-1 record, with Korey Flynn's
game-winning goal from her own end proving to be a key play in the Eagles'
4-3 win over Evanston. The Wildkits beat Jenison 9-2 to claim third place
at the event.
Naperville North Tournament
Marian beat Stagg in their first game, knocked off Naperville North in an
overtime thriller to advance to the title game, then beat Hinsdale Central
10-5 in the final game to win the event. The Red Devils won an OT game of
their own over Lockport to advance to the title game and also beat
Palatine in the opening round to finish in second place.
The hosts beat Lockport 10-4 in the third-place game to end up with a 2-1
record. Palatine beat Stagg 16-9 in the fifth-place game.
Stevenson Tournament
Stevenson edged McAuley 6-5 in the tournament opener and then earned
victories over Fremd and Young to win their own tournament title. McAuley
beat Fremd 3-2 in a low-scoring affair to finish in second place, while
the Vikings beat Young 20-4 to finish in the third spot.
