Tournament Previews
By Aaron Brown
The tournament schedule picks up this weekend as we near the second half of the
water polo season.
Here is a preview of what to
watch for beginning at on Friday night:
Bremen
Tournament
The Bremen Tournament got a jumpstart on the weekend, as six teams
played six games on Monday night to determine the championship round
schedule for Saturday afternoon .
Bradley and Von Steuben both won twice to setup a rematch of last
year's title game, which Bradley won 12-7. The team's will kick
things off at 3:30pm.
Bremen will play Richards
in the third place game at 2:15pm, while R-B plays Argo in the fifth
place game at 1:00pm.
Format: 6 teams, 9 games,
championship-round format
Hersey/Elk Grove Tournament
Hersey and Elk Grove
co-host a six-team event on Saturday, with Andrew, Hoffman, Maine
East and Maine South filling out the field.
The Huskies will have their hands full with both
Maine South and Maine East, two teams with a combined 17 wins in
2011. In the other group, Andrew and Hoffman will look to get their
seasons headed in the right direction as they join co-host Elk Grove
in a three-game set that will determine the final round matchups.
Format: 6 teams, 9 games,
championship-round format
Naperville North
Tournament
The Huskies host their second annual tournament on Saturday, where they look to
defend their title against an impressive field. To get back to the title game,
the hosts will have to outduel both Sandburg and St Charles North.
Schaumburg lost in the title game by a one-goal margin last year, so they will
be looking to get back to the final game once again. To do so, they will face
difficult challenges from both Fremd (a team that beat the Saxons earlier this
season) and Stagg, a team that has posted an impressive 10-4 mark thus far in
2011.
Format: 6 teams, 9 games,
championship-round format
St Patrick
Tournament
Brother Rice will look to defend their tournament title at St Patrick, where
they beat the hosts and Loyola in the first place bracket in 2010. The Shamrocks
will look to exact a bit of revenge at their home pool, as they also lost to
Loyola in the first place bracket to finish in third place.
The hosts play in a group with Loyola and Young. Defending champions Brother
Rice are lined up with Lincoln-Way East and Waubonsie Valley. The third group
features Evanston, H-F, and Libertyville.
Six games will be played on Friday night, followed by three games on Saturday
that will determine the championship round brackets. The top teams from each
group will then play each other in a three-game set to determine the tournament
winner.
Format: 9 teams, 18 games,
championship bracket format
Stevenson
Tournament
The Patriots host their second tournament of the season, this time with Latin,
McHenry, and Oak Park filling out the four team field. The action kicks off on
Saturday morning with each team playing three games in Lincolnshire.
