Week 4

Boys & Girls Tournament Previews

By Aaron Brown

There are two tournaments on the docket this weekend as we get closer to the midpoint of the regular season. On the boys' side, eight teams clash at Brother Rice, while the same exact number of teams play at the Lincoln-Way Tournament on the girls' side of things. Here is a preview of what to watch for beginning at 4:00pm on Friday afternoon:

BOYS

Brother Rice Tournament

This year's Brother Rice Tournament comes a bit earlier in the season than last year, when it was played in late April. York replaces Naperville North in the eight-team field, while the other seven teams remain the same. In last year's edition, the hosts beat St Patrick in the tournament final, while Loyola claimed a third place finish.

The tournament gets underway on Friday night, with the hosts taking on Lockport in the first game at 4:00pm. Those two are in a the same group, along with Loyola and Sandburg. The other group of four includes St Patrick, Hinsdale Central, St Rita, and York. The top teams from each group will meet at 6:00pm for the tournament title, while the other teams will play in the three games prior to the final game for seventh, fifth, and third place.

Format: 8 teams, 16 games, championship-round format

GIRLS

Lincoln-Way Tournament

The Lincoln-Way Tournament, which is normally hosted solely by Lincoln-Way East, will use both East and West's pools on Friday for the opening round of the event. That is in large part due to the field expanding from six to eight teams, as both LWW and Schaumburg have entered this year's competition.

The format has also changed, with the team's playing what amounts to four quarterfinal games on Friday afternoon to determine who will have a chance to win the tournament title.

The first round games will be played at 4:30pm and 5:30pm at the two different pools, with the losing teams playing in the consolation round at 6:30pm and the winning teams following at 7:30pm. The Friday night results will setup the final round of action, with the championship being played at LWE at 5:00pm.

In last year's event, Lincoln-Way Central beat Lincoln-Way East 12-6 in the title game, while Andrew finished in third place with a win over Lincoln-Way North. However, Richards enters this year's competition with an 11-2 record and Schaumburg brings a 4-3 mark to the table, so it should make for an interesting set of games over the weekend.
