Week 2
Girls
Tournament Previews
By Aaron Brown
The girls' water polo season continues to power
on as five tournaments fill the docket this weekend.
Here is a preview of what
to watch for beginning at 4:30pm on Friday afternoon:
Bremen
Tournament
The Red
Jaguars' tournament uses a playoff format, so each Friday night
winner will advance to the semifinals on Saturday afternoon. Argo, Bradley, Hinsdale
South, Marian, Morton, Richards, and Stagg will all be looking to upset the
fourteenth-ranked hosts on their home turf.
Bremen topped Marian 8-1 in the title game in 2010, while
Stagg outlasted Bradley 15-14 in overtime for third place.
Format: 8 teams, 12 games,
bracket/playoff format
GBS Tournament
Glenbrook South will play host to three MSL teams when Elk Grove, Hersey, and
Palatine come to visit in a four-team affair on Saturday morning. The hosts and
Palatine will be looking to improve off their 1-3 early season records, while
Elk Grove is in search of their first win. Hersey enters the contest with a 4-4
mark and finished in third place at last week's Loyola Tourney.
Hersey tipped GBS 12-11 in the eventual title game of the event last year, while
Elk Grove defeated Palatine 13-10 in the third place game.
Format: 4 teams,
6 games, round-robin format
Lockport Tournament
The four-team Lockport Tournament showcases
three ranked teams out of the four in attendance. #4 St Ignatius and #10 Mother McAuley lead the field, while #17 Neuqua Valley will be looking to pull off
another upset after beating the Macs here last season. Lockport lost their
season opener earlier this week and will be looking to make their mark at the
own invitational.
Format: 4 teams, 6 games, round-robin format
Naperville
Central Tournament
The Redhawks' tournament quietly features the
second, third, and fifth ranked teams in the state, so there should be an
abundance of high quality water polo showcased here beginning at 8:00am on
Saturday. The first game is a duel between #3 Naperville Central and #5
Mundelein, which could end up determining who plays in the tournament's title
game later in the day. The Redhawks and Mustangs also match up with #30 Oak Park
in their bracket.
On the other side of the bracket is #2
H-F; the Vikings will take on #20 Naperville North and York.
Naperville Central earned narrow wins
over Mundelein and H-F in last year's tournament to claim the title. They will
look to do the same in 2011, but it's anyone's guess as to who will be the last
team standing at this year's event.
Format: 6 teams, 9 games, championship round
STC North
Tournament
The St Charles North Tournament lines up six
competitive squads looking to give their season a boost in the early going with
a solid tournament performance.
BG, Conant, and Hoffman represent the
Mid-Suburban League in the tournament, while Andrew and Lake Forest join the
hosts in a Saturday-only event.
Andrew earned double-digit wins in all
three of their games last season to win the tournament title, so the rest of the
field will be looking to close the gap and knock off the T-Bolts in this year's
event. BG brings a perfect record into the tourney, while Conant will be looking
to build off a solid showing in their own event last weekend.
The hosts are still in search of their first win of their
2011 campaign, which they hope to earn on Saturday. Hoffman and Lake Forest both
enter the event with one win apiece and will be looking for more this weekend.
Format: 6 teams, 9 games, championship round
