Week 2
Boys
Tournament Previews
By Aaron Brown
There is no letup in the tournament schedule
this weekend, as there are five events scheduled across the state as the boys' water
polo regular truly kicks into high gear.
Here is a preview of what
to watch for beginning at 4:30pm on Thursday and stretching all the way
until 7:00pm on Saturday night:
Evanston
Tournament
The field at Evanston includes the hosts, Bremen, GBS, GBN, McHenry, and St
Viator. McHenry edged GBS 9-8 in last year's event to finish the
proceedings with a perfect record,
so expect those two teams to have a fierce battle once again over the weekend.
Meanwhile,
St Viator is off to an impressive 4-1 start and will look to spoil the party for
the Warriors and the Titans. The hosts should also make things interesting after
earning their first win of the season this week, while GBN will look to bounce
back from a 2-4 start and Bremen will be seeking their second win of the year
and then some.
Format: 6 teams, 15 games,
round-robin format
Fenwick
Tournament

Hinsdale Central
Tournament
The opening round of the
Red Devils' tournament starts at 5:00pm and should feature several close
contests between the likes of Andrew, Hinsdale South, Lockport, LWC, R-B, STC East,
STC North and the hosts.
In last year's edition, the hosts finished with a
perfect record, edging both Lockport and LWC by two goal margins.
Most of the games were especially close in the final round, as
Lockport outlasted LWC in overtime and finished in a draw with
Andrew. With two improved St Charles teams in the mix, it should
make for a tournament where anyone could emerge with the title.
Format: 8 teams, 16 games,
championship round
Maine East
Tournament
The Blue Demons host their first tournament over the weekend, with two games
beginning on Friday night and the proceedings continue on Saturday morning. The
hosts will play in a group of two CPS opponents (Northside, Von Steuben), while
fellow CSL teams Maine South and Niles West are joined by Bradley in the second
group.
The top two teams from each group will play in the semifinal games at 12:00pm
and 1:00pm, with the title game wrapping things up at 3:00pm.
Format: 6 teams, 9 games,
championship round
Vernon Hills
Tournament
The Cougars welcome Barrington, Highland/Deerfield, Lake Forest, and
Libertyville back for a five-team tournament that gets underway on Friday night.
Lake Forest swept the competition in last year's event, but they should face a
much stiffer challenge from all four teams this time around. Barrington won
three games here last year, while Highland/Deerfield is coming off their own
tournament win last weekend. Meanwhile, the hosts will be looking for their
second win of 2011. Libertyville gets their competitive season started at this
event.
Format: 5 teams, 10 games,
round-robin format
