Preview Play-by-play Recap Recap
Quarterfinal #1: Homewood-Flossmoor 9 Fenwick 6
LINCOLNSHIRE, IL - Rebecca Mathews scored seven times and Homewood-Flossmoor outscored Fenwick 6-1 during the second and third quarters as they shocked the defending state champions on Friday at the state tournament 9-6.
After a tightly contested opening period of play that ended with the teams tied at 1-1, Mathews scored two straight goals and Michelle Mayer added a score before halftime. Mathews really got going in the third period, scoring three straight scores after Fenwick's Emma McKernin cut the Vikings' lead to 4-2 early in the second half.
With a 7-2 lead, the Vikings just had to finish things off in the final seven minutes and not let the Friars back into the game. And they were able to keep pace with the Friars behind two more goals from Mathews, while also chipping away at the game clock by keeping as much possession as possible. Fenwick did score four times late in the game, but it wasn't enough as the Vikings moved on to the state semifinals and a matchup with St Ignatius at 11:30am on Saturday.
McKernin scored 2 times in the loss for the Friars, who ended their season with a 26-7 record.
