All-Star Game Report
By Aaron Brown
The first-ever All-Star Weekend was a smashing success
on Sunday, June 6 at Stevenson High School.
25 boys and 20 girls participated in two thrilling
games that were both decided by one goal. Below are the recaps from each
competition:
BOYS ALL-STAR GAME
Dan Francisco made two penalty shot saves in a shootout
and Jacob Himmel totaled 5 goals to lead the White Team of All-Stars to a
13-12 extra time win over the Black Team of All-Stars on Sunday.
Matt Stelnicki sent the game to overtime for Black with
a fourth quarter goal, but Francisco denied his game-tying effort in the
ensuing shootout to give his team the win. The Fenwick goalie also made a
key stop on a penalty shot by Mundelein's Will Davidson on Black's
previous attempt.
Himmel, who scored three straight first quarter goals
and also notched a goal during the shootout, was named Co-MVP of the event
along with Francisco, who totaled 12 saves in the game.
Tommy Poulos (OPRF) scored 3 goals and AJ Galainena
(Latin) scored 2 times in the win for the White Team. Mark Alvarado (St
Ignatius), Mike Mulcrone (Brother Rice), and Ryan Stanley (NC) also scored
once in the victory.
Mark Menis (NC) led the Black Team with 4 goals,
Stelnicki (Brother Rice) and Reilly Shanahan (McHenry) each scored 2
times, and Alex Rembialkowski (Stevenson), Matt Farmer (Fenwick), David
Sekula (Lyons), John Osborne (Fenwick) each notched a goal in the loss.
GIRLS ALL-STAR GAME
Abbey Kerth scored two straight goals in the fourth
quarter and Emily Tylka allowed only two goals in the second half to lead
the White Team All-Stars to an 8-7 win over the Green All-Stars on Sunday.
Kerth totaled 4 goals and Tylka recorded 14 saves and
made two penalty shot saves as the duo was named Co-MVP's of the All-Star
Game.
The Green All-Stars tried to build a lead in the first
half, as they used a 3-0 run to take a 5-4 lead at the break after two
goals by Gabi Cabrera (Young) and a score by Fenwick's Stephanie Ovalle.
Tylka, however, stopped two straight penalty shots to
keep White within a goal at the half, and they quickly tied the game in
the early stages of the third period on Kerth's second goal of the game.
Kirby Kaptur (Lyons) assisted Stevenson's Cheyenne
Montijo on goal that broke the 5-5 deadlock, but Alexis Jones (Mundelein)
responded with a goal in the final minute of the third quarter to send the
game to the final period tied at 6-6.
After four minutes of tough defensive pressure from
both teams, Kerth gave the White Team the lead when her outside shot was
deflected past Green Team goalie Eb Keeve (WV), then she scored on White's
next possession to make the score 8-6 heading into the final minutes of
regulation.
Ovalle assisted Cabrera on a goal from two-meters in
the final minute of play, but the White Team was able to run the clock out
on an 8-7 victory.
Along with Kerth's 4 goals, Danijela Jackovich (LWC)
added 2 scores and Cheyenne Montijo (Stevenson), and Maeve O'Connor
(Loyola) each scored one time.
Cabrera led the way for the Green All-Stars with 3
scores, while Alexis Jones (Mundelein), Kate Stelnicki (St Ignatius),
Rebecca Mathews (H-F), and Stephanie Ovalle (Fenwick) each tallied one
goal apiece in the losing effort.
