Week 1
The
following is a summary of what took place during the first week of the
season. This is not a complete list and we can only include a few people
in this summary, but the purpose is to recognize a few of the best
performances from each week.
Players To Watch
Boys
- Eryk Puczek (Lane)
Puczek scored 7 goals and added 7
assists and 5 steals in the Indians' 16-9 win over Northside.
Boys
- Zach Demertzis (GBS)
Demertzis totaled 7 goals and 7
steals in the Titans' 18-7 win over Deer Park.
Boys
- Mike Mulcrone (Brother Rice)
Mulcrone scored 5 goals in the Crusaders' 16-3 win over Mt Carmel.
Boys
- Zach Golob (Stagg)
Golob scored 9 goals at the
Chargers' home tournament, helping them earn a surprise 10-9 win over
Young in the third-place game.
Girls - Kelsey White (Hinsdale Central)
The Red Devils' keeper recorded 22 saves in a
7-6 overtime win over Stagg earlier in the week.
Biggest Impact
Boys
- Bob Haines (Neuqua Valley)
Haines scored
the game-winning goal at the end of regulation to give Neuqua a 13-12
victory over Naperville North.
Boys
- Nate Urban (New Trier)
Urban scored
the game-tying goal in the final minute to help New Trier secure a 13-13
tie with Young in the preliminary round of the Stagg Tournament. The
Trevians eventually won the tiebreaker to advance to the title game.
Boys
- Matt Wich (Evanston)
Wich
registered 4 goals and helped lead Evanston to a 9-7 victory over
Stevenson to start the season.
Girls - Andrea Cobb (Conant)
Cobb scored 2 crucial fourth-quarter goals to help the Cougars hold off Lane
11-9 in the title game of their own tournament.
Girls - Chloe Kaulas (Latin)
The Romans' goalie stopped a penalty shot in overtime to help Latin beat
Lincoln-Way Central 7-6.
Top Goalie Performances
Boys
- Cody Korus/Gavin Taves/Sam Buchman (New Trier)
The Trevians'
goalies earned a key shutout over Morton that helped New Trier reach the
Stagg Tournament's title game.
Girls - Grace Trilla (Lyons)
The Lions'
goalkeeper shutout Hinsdale South and allowed just 3 goals in three grams
to start the season.
Girls - Shay Bell (Young)
Bell started the season off in fine fashion as she earned
a 9-0 shutout win over Mather.
Girls - Sam Virella (Naperville Central)
Allowed just 6 goals in three games at the
Naperville-area tournament, including a shutout against Naperville North.
She has allowed only 12 goals in her first five games of the season.

Boys
- Evanston
The Wildkits
made a statement this week with a 9-7 win over Stevenson.
Boys
- Stagg
The Chargers
jumped into the Top 25 this week after stunning Young 10-9 in the
third-place game of their tournament.
Girls - Marian
The Catholic League team earned impressive wins over Hinsdale South, Oak
Park, and Northside this weekend.
Girls
- Waubonsie Valley
The Warriors grabbed wins over
Neuqua Valley and Naperville North over the weekend to move into the Top
25.
News and Notes
Boys/Girls - The Chicago Public League schools will continue to
participate in the sport this season, despite reports that the CPS is
cutting funding for water polo and other sports.
