Rebecca Shopiro scored 6 goals and Janelle
Bartman recorded 10 saves as Stevenson rolled to a 16-7 win over Fremd
in the second quarterfinal of the state tournament on Friday in the
Patriots' home pool. Amy Michelau and Rachel Cliburn also scored 3 times
each in the victory for Stevenson.
Erika Lauraitis scored 3 goals, Katie French
added 2 scores, and Kelli DiCanio made 8 saves in the loss for the
Vikings.
Shopiro, Cliburn, and Michelau came out
firing on all cylinders in the first period, as Cliburn scored on
Stevenson's counterattack early in the quarter, Shopiro forced a
turnover and drew an ejection before assisting Michelau on a goal from
the left post, and Shopiro drew a foul and scored from five meters late
in the period to give Stevenson a quick 3-0 lead. Cliburn scored before
the end of the quarter after Katie Moy had her first two meter attempt
blocked by DiCanio, as Moy recovered the rebound and assisted Cliburn on
her second score of the game.
French got Fremd on the scoreboard with lob
shot from outside seven meters early in the second period to close the
gap to 4-1. But Cliburn has the answer, as she twice forced turnovers
and assisted Shopiro on two straight goals to increase the Patriots'
advantage to 6-1. Cliburn scored again, this time on a breakaway chance,
after Michelau made a steal on the defensive end and passed ahead for
the assist. Bartman made a save on Krysti Ruiz' outside shot attempt
late in the half, but Lauraitis was waiting on the doorstep to put in
the rebound goal and make the score 7-2. The Patriots closed out the
half in a bog way, however, as Michelau made a steal and scored a
breakaway goal and Shopiro drew a penalty shot and coverted the attempt
to make the score 9-2 in favor of the Patriots at halftime.
Stevenson poured it on early in the third
period, as Cliburn first made a steal and assisted Melanie Koto on a
breakaway goal, then drew an ejection and assisted Kelly Lowry on a skip
shot from outside five meters. The Patriots scored again when Melanie
Sulkin made a steal on the defensive end, passed ahead to Mary
Novokhovsky, who assisted Michelau on a breakaway goal. French, who drew
two ejections that the Vikings could not convert earlier in the period,
drew a penalty shot, which Lauraitis converted to make the score 12-4
late in the third quarter. Shopiro closed out the period with a goal
from two meters as time expired and Stevenson took a 13-4 lead in the
final quarter.
Shopiro added her sixth goal early in the
final period, then Moy scored twice on consecutive possessions to put
Stevenson ahead 16-4. Katie DeFillipo, French, and Lauraitis finished
the game off with three straight goals for Fremd, but it was not enough
as Stevenson cruised to a 16-7 victory.
