Fenwick jumped out to a 8-2 lead in the
first half en route to a 10-4 victory over Homewood-Flossmoor in the
first girls' quarterfinal game of the state tournament on Friday
afternoon. Morgan Bonk recorded 4 goals and Katie Tynan added 2 scores
to lead the Friars on the offensive end in the win. Mariclaire Bresnahan
totaled 7 saves for the Friars, who also got one goal apiece from
Stephanie Ovalle, Lisett Calderon, Wella Huening, and Emma McKernin.
Andrea Peterson led the Vikings with 2 goals
in the loss, while Katie McHugh and Kiley Maanum each added one score
for H-F.
Fenwick wasted no time in getting on the
scoreboard, as the Friars won the swim-off and Bonk assisted Ovalle on a
goal from the right post from two meters out. Bonk scored from two
meters just one minute later, and the Friars had two goals in their
first two possessions of the game. H-F's Andrea Peterson connected on an
outside shot to keep the Vikings within striking distance early, but
Bonk added her second goal of the period from two meters out and
McKernin raced to the goalline to push a loose ball into the goal to
give Fenwick a 4-1 advantage. In the final minute of the opening
quarter, Maanum made a steal on the left side of her own end and
sprinted down the pool to register an unassisted goal. The Friars
regained the momentum at the end of the period, however, as Bonk scored
on a lob shot as time expired to make the score 5-2 heading to the
second quarter.
Fenwick would strike first once again in the
second period, as Ovalle made a steal on H-F's first possession and
Tynan delivered on a shot from outside seven meters to put the Friars on
top 6-2. Bonk drew a penalty shot one minute later, and Calderon scored
to give Fenwick a comfortable 7-2 lead. H-F's goalie Erika Adamonis came
out of the net to prevent a goal and record a steal midway through the
period, but Bresnahan followed suit with two solid saves on the other
end for the Friars. Maanum would draw an ejection late in the period to
give the Vikings another scoring opportunity, but Fenwick sub Molly
Loeffler made a field block and Calderon assisted Tynan on a drive on
the other end as Fenwick pulled ahead 8-2 with one minute left in the
first half. Peterson added her second goal of the game on an outside
shot late in the half, then H-F's Michelle Mayer just missed over the
net on the Vikings' last scoring chance before the break.
The defenses clamped down in the third
period, as neither team was able to light up the scoreboard over the
next seven minutes. Peterson drew an ejection early in the fourth period
that led to a goal by McHugh from inside five meters and H-F trimmed the
Fenwick lead to 8-4. The Friars sealed the victory later in the period
as Bonk scored directly after a timeout and Huening scored from nine
meters away late in the game to give Fenwick a 10-4 win.
