Glenbrook South used a 4-1 run in the second half to
come-from-behind to beat Lyons 7-6 on Thursday night in the second state
quarterfinal game. Chris DeLetto scored 4 goals and Brandon Stenger added 2
scores to lead the Titans to the victory.
Lyons looked sharp early on, as freshman Dave Sekula
found the net from the right post after drawing an ejection and taking a pass
from Patrick Weigand midway through the opening period. Peter Bruton gave the
Lions a 2-0 advantage on their next possession, as he drilled a shot from
outside 5-meters. DeLetto responded for GBS with a goal from 7-meters, but Lyons
answered back at the end of the first quarter as Weigand floated a shot over GBS'
goalie Ben May to give Lyons a 3-1 lead heading into the second period.
Stenger assisted DeLetto on a backhand goal from
2-meters midway through the second quarter to close the gap to 3-2, but Lyons'
Patrick Donovan scored on a lob shot from the left post to give LT a 4-2
halftime lead.
DeLetto came out of the halftime break on fire, as
he scored on a skip shot from 5-meters just two minutes into the third period.
Moments later, he tied the score after drawing a foul and hitting a shot from
7-meters out. Lyons had a chance to reclaim the lead, but May made a save on
Donovan's lob attempt before GBS took a timeout. Stenger scored quickly after
the timeout to give the Titans their first lead at the 2:27 mark of the third
quarter. Lyons responded as goalie Spencer Ellison came out of the net to make a
steal, then Donovan turned his defender and lobbed a shot in from the left post
to tie the game at 5-5 in the final minute of the third quarter. GBS kept the
pressure on, as Andrew Grieve flipped a shot in from just inside 5-meters with
only five seconds left in the period to give the Titans a 6-5 lead heading into
the final quarter.
The turning point of the game came early in the
final period. Bruton drew a penalty shot with 4:32 left in regulation, but Tim
Cosentino's shot hit the post and May recovered the loose ball to keep the
Titans ahead by a goal. On GBS' next possession, Alex Scott drew an ejection
and, after a timeout, Stenger connected on his second goal of the game from the
left side to make the score 7-5 in favor of the Titans. Ellison kept Lyons
within striking distance with a save on Hengels 5-meter shot, and the Lions'
offense responded on the other end as Weigand drove to 2-meters and lobbed a
shot over May to cut the lead to 7-6. Donovan drew an ejection on Lyons' next
possession, but Tommy Nimrod came up with a field block to keep GBS ahead by a
goal. Cosentino would have two more chances to score from just outside 5-meters
in the last two minutes, but May came up with two critical saves and the Titans
were able to run out the clock and hold on to a 7-6 win over Lyons.
Donovan and Weigand each scored 2 goals in the loss
for LT, while Ellison recorded 16 saves for the Lions.
