McAuley wasted no time in making it known
that they were ready to defend their title. After Perez made a steal to
put an end to Fenwick's first possession, Chavez drove to the right post
and then used a solid fake to score and put McAuley ahead 1-0. McNamara
made two consecutive saves on Fenwick's next possession, and McShane
drew an ejection and scored the second goal of the game on the other end
just moments later to make the score 2-0. Perez and Ryan scored on

quarter, while Chavez scored for the second time on a lob shot to give
McAuley a 5-0 advantage with 1:20 left in the period.
With adversity staring them in the face, the
Friars put together a 3-0 run in the final 1:04 of the period to get to
within two goals of the defending champions. Ovalle connected on an
outside shot to put Fenwick on the scoreboard, then, after McAuley's
next shot attempt hit the crossbar, Fenwick's Emma McKernin drew a
penalty shot that Calderon finished to cut the lead to 5-2. McKernin
would later add a goal from seven meters with just eight seconds left in
the quarter to make the score 5-3 heading into the second period.
Things evened out early in the second
quarter, as Calderon made a steal on one end and skipped a shot past
McNamara on the other end to make the score 5-4. Bresnahan made a key
save after Perez drew an ejection for McAuley, allowing Calderon to tie
the game on Fenwick's next possession with a goal from two meters out.
McShane made a steal midway through the second quarter that led to an
ejection and a goal by Perez that put McAuley ahead 6-5. The Macs had a
chance to extend their lead, but Bresnahan made three straight saves to
keep Fenwick within one at halftime.
Things started slowly in the next period,
with each team putting the clamps down on the defensive end. Bresnahan
made a key block on a backhand attempt by Chavez from two meters early
in the third quarter, but Nolan scored from seven meters out at the 4:30
mark to put McAuley ahead 7-5.
Fenwick tried to stop the Macs' momentum,
but after Bonk made a steal on the offensive end, her lob shot stopped
on the goalline and McNamara retrieved it before it could cut McAuley's
lead to one goal. Fenwick did not let up, as Calderon drove to the right
post, took a pass from Wella Huening, and scored from two meters out to
make the score 7-6. Ovalle drew an ejection on Fenwick's next possession
and scored from two meters to tie the game at 7-7, but McShane answered
from seven meters out just fifteen seconds later to put McAuley back on
top 8-7. Fenwick missed from outside on their next chance, but Bonk made
a steal and scored a breakaway goal with ten seconds left in the third
quarter to tie the score at 8-8 heading into the final period.
Fenwick's first possession was stopped by
McAuley, but Bonk made a steal on the offensive end and scored from two
meters to give the Friars their first lead of the game. She was then
called for her third ejection early in the final period, but McAuley
could not capitalize after an officials' timeout and Fenwick clung to a
one-goal lead.
McAuley grabbed the momentum one minute
later, as McShane made a steal and scored on an outside shot to tie the
game at 9-9 with 4:45 left in regulation. They had a chance to take the
lead, but Bresnahan denied Perez' from two meters out and Fenwick's
Calderon scored from seven meters out on the other end to make the score
10-9 in favor of the Friars. Calderon continued to take matters into her
own hands for Fenwick, as she made a steal on the defensive end, drew an
ejection, then assisted Tynan on a goal from seven meters to give
Fenwick an 11-9 lead.
McAuley had two straight chances to cut the
Friars' lead to one goal, but Ryan missed on a shot from seven meters
and Bresnahan blocked Chavez' two-meter backhand with 0:45 left on the
game clock. Nolan made the score 11-10 with a goal from two meters with
twelve seconds remaining, but Ovalle drew a foul and ran out the clock
as Fenwick emerged with a one-goal victory.
